Kōkua Project: One Beer, Brewed By Many
The Kōkua Project, spearheaded by Maui Brewing Co., came out of a need for support for those impacted by wildfires that destroyed communities in West Maui in August. Boundary Bay Brewery is proud to be one of 600+ participating breweries in the project.
From the moment the fires started, destroying the historic town of Lahaina, Garrett Marrero - Founder & CEO of Maui Brewing Co., has been on the ground and across social media, helping his community and spreading news about the fires to the world. He was organizing supply donations and even making and distributing meals to those who were impacted by the fires. Since then, he’s continued to use social media as a way to keep the public informed on everything happening in Maui, and where support is needed.
On August 29th, Maui Brewing Co. announced the Kōkua Project.
The goal of The Kōkua Project is to bring the brewing community together and raise funds for the people of Maui. To kickstart the project Maui Brewing Co. created a beer, Kōkua IPA, and shared the recipe with every brewery that wished to participate, even homebrewers! There are currently over 600 participating breweries across the world. All Maui Brewing Co. asked of each participant was that they brew Kōkua IPA, and donate the proceeds to Maui. Our version, Kōkua West Coast IPA is currently available on tap at the brewery!
Official Press Release:
Boundary Bay Brewing Company is continuing efforts to support those affected by the Maui wildfires by participating in Maui Brewing’s Kōkua Project. One hundred percent of proceeds from Kōkua sales will be donated to benefit those impacted by the Maui Wildfires through Legacy of Aloha, Makai Foundation, and Maui Brewing Co. Fire Fund.
Boundary Bay joins hundreds of other breweries and industry partners across the country in brewing and donating funds through this session-able IPA. Boundary Bay’s rendition will be available on draft on Friday, September 29th.
“To see our craft community come together again during times of tragedy speaks to us,” says Janet Lightner, Owner and General Manager of Boundary Bay Brewing Company. “The ability of our good friend Garrett Marrero [Founder/CEO] and his team at Maui Brewing Company to spearhead this campaign and continue to lead recovery efforts inspires our team to provide help any way we are able to.”
The Kōkua Project is phase 2 of Boundary Bay’s fundraising efforts. In August, Boundary Bay partnered with Walton Beverage to sell Maui Brewing’s Coconut Hiwa Porter along with Hawaiian leis that were displayed in the brewery to show the community’s continued support.
More than $3,100 have been raised for the Kokua Restaurant & Hospitality Fund, an organization that supports restaurant, bar, and hospitality workers displaced by the fires.
“To be a vessel for our community to aid another [community] is truly humbling,” says Lightner. “Mahalo!”
