In the Absence of April Brews Day

Since it’s April, we can’t help but reminisce about Bellingham’s biggest beer festival, April Brews Day. It’s a lively spring-time fundraiser that features the best of Bellingham’s local breweries and food vendors. Proceeds go to the essential community nonprofit Max Higbee Center–an organization that provides community-based recreation programs for youth and adults with developmental disabilities.

It turns out that years ago the Max Higbee Center played a large part in Boundary Bay’s developing concept of what “Community” means. After experiencing some fundraising issues early on, Max Higbee struck up a conversation with us. Well aware that Bellingham had yet to establish a beer festival, our general manager Janet Lightner suggested they create one. To this day, it’s the largest beer festival in town, and it funds the majority of their capital campaign year over year. It’s anecdotes like these that guide us in our decisions of what it means to support community.

Fundraising without April Brew’s Day

Since the nature of social events has been ever-changing over the past few years, having a huge beer festival has been out of reach. However, it hasn’t discouraged us from trying to raise funds for the Max Higbee Center. We want to make sure the essential work they do receives financial support. Every Tuesday night this month, we donate $1 from every pint served during our Piano and Pints event, featuring local legend Paul Klein on the piano. Paul is also donating his booking fee and tips! Be sure to come out every Tuesday at 6pm for the rest of April to hear some great music and be part of our efforts to support our friends and neighbors at the Max Higbee Center!
