Painting With Thread: Memorializing Photographs With Embroidery

The Artist

Marianne Casasanta has been exploring with embroidery as a medium since 2003. She initially started by digitizing her children’s artwork, stitching it onto items such as tote bags, clothing and canvas, allowing her to always keep them close.

She now utilizes photographs of people, pets, and landscapes to create pieces that have a painted textile look to them, hence the name The Painted Thread. With pieces embroidered in black and white, to those using an astounding number of different colored threads, Marianne’s work is extremely lifelike and beautiful.

“My artistic journey began at the sewing machine. My mom being my biggest influencer, we tried all sorts of mediums over many years. In 2003 I bought my first embroidery machine. Soon after, I taught myself to digitize using my children’s art as inspiration. The stitching allowed me to keep their special drawings close at hand to adore, rather than store in a box. I stitched them on tote bags, clothing, and canvas to frame. From there, I broadened my technique and began digitizing photographs of people, pets, and most recently, landscapes. The result of this technique gives a painted textile look with a modern twist, resulting in a lifelike image that one holds dear. What I love most about creating custom keepsakes for people is the creativity of technology and fiber combined. I find great joy in connecting with people and making them a unique piece of artwork they can love and treasure forever!” - Marianne Casasanta
