(pt. 3) Ripple Effect: How Shawn Kemp’s Art is Supporting our Community

Shawn Kemp’s art has been donated to Rooted Generosity in support of the Jordan Slagle Boundary Bay Scholarship Fund. The show will be featured in the Bistro section of the brewery through the end of March.

About the Collaboration

Boundary Bay Brewery is proud to collaborate with local artist Shawn Kemp as the brewery’s featured artist during February and March. Kemp has donated all art pieces to Rooted Generosity’s Jordan Slagle Boundary Bay Scholarship Fund, which specifically supports Boundary Bay employees. His unique creations are displayed in the Bistro and can be purchased off the wall for $400 each. All proceeds will support the scholarship fund. Those who wish to donate more are welcome to do so.

“I have donated this show and all the proceeds to the Jordan Slagle Fund as a way to say thank you to the Boundary Bay team for enduring a brutal pandemic and keeping our bellies and hearts full,” - Shawn Kemp

The scholarship fund has already supported nine employees of the brewery enrolled at various institutions of higher learning since its inception in 2016. Ramona and John Mark Slagle launched Rooted Generosity after their son, Jordan’s unexpected passing. The nonprofit exists to extend and enrich the impact of generosity as demonstrated by Jordan throughout his extraordinary life. Recipients of the award include Brian Skywalker, Jabez Richard, Megan Hansen, Megan Gambill, Anne Malone, Gina Garding, Nik Budden, Allie Craswell and Jenny Schmidt.

“The Jordan Slagle Boundary Bay Scholarship continues to support folks as they reach toward their important goals,” said John Mark Slagle. “Each year since Jordan's untimely passing in 2016, deserving learners connected to the Boundary Bay community have been gifted with funds - all focused on helping folks further leverage their own grit and determination to meet their educational goals. Degrees have been completed, certifications received, and careers extended in a wide range of professions and disciplines. This past year, the generosity of the scholarship was expanded to help fund a recovery journey. Learning takes many shapes. We look forward to continuing the scholarship for years to come.

Create Your Own Art Digitally

In addition to the fundraiser, the gallery show will feature a unique opportunity for community members to create a piece of art together. Those interested can scan the QR code on the Bistro wall or click here to generate designs. Any designs shared on social media may be selected to be part of the community mural. Instructions for how to participate can be found by clicking here.

“I’ll select my favorites posts and turn the generated design into an in-real-life segment for the mural at Boundary Bay Brewery,” said Kemp. “Once the show is finished, you’ll be able to collect your personal segment and keep it forever.”

About Shawn Kemp

Shawn Kemp produces art using computers, pure high intensity light and traditional woodcraft. His unique creations are composed of layers of wood that are cut with a high-powered laser and finished with shellac, which he carefully tints.

“I’m inspired by the complexity of nature and the order of mathematics, and my pieces incorporate these principles in their design,” Kemp said.
