February Art Gallery: Mike Schmidt & his Pearl Jam Posters

Who is Mike?

Beyond being an all-star coworker and incredibly kind individual the two characteristics that define Mike Schmidt are his red, braided beard (we even named a beer after it) and his passion for Pearl Jam.

This month, we’re showcasing his expansive Pearl Jam concert poster in our Bistro Gallery and celebrating with the brew it inspired: Present Tense ESB.

Mike’s poster collection will be on display in our Bistro through the end of February, and a great time to see them all is during the First Friday Art Walk on 2/3 from 6-10 pm.

Our coworker Jenny recently interviewed Mike to learn more about his poster gallery and undying love of the band.

How many Pearl Jam posters do you have in total? Why do you collect Pearl Jam posters?“

36! Each poster is its own concert. They do a special event poster for each concert.”

When was your first Pearl Jam Show?

“The first one I ever went to was in ‘98 in South Dakota. I was in love with the music but didn’t realize how great the shows are. Eddie is unique and hilarious and talks about relevant stuff. Not a lot of other bands are like that - maybe Phish or Grateful Dead. Each show is completely different. Sometimes I don’t love hearing them on a CD but when you see them live it’s a whole different experience.”

You’re a member of the VIP fan club yeah?

“Oh, yeah! The Ten Club, which was named after their first album “Ten”. I’ve been a member since 2001.”

These posters are incredible. I’ve loved looking at your collection - it gives such a sense of the vibe of Pearl Jam and its artistic personality. Why did you start collecting them?

“Each unique poster is from a concert I’ve been to! Looking at them takes me back to the show. I’m still trying to locate one more poster to complete my collection!”

As your friend, I’ve heard a lot of Pearl Jam concert stories. What’s one that you think our customers would love?

“In 2013, the bass player, Jeff Ament, came to Boundary after we had just seen Pearl Jam in Chicago. He was randomly in the Beer Garden. I spotted him and was star-struck; everyone made me talk to him. He’s buddies with a Missoula friend and had hooked us up with VIP tix, so I got to thank him for that. It was great and terrifying, but they’re all so cool and have time to say hello.”

I first met you back in 2012, and ever since, whenever I think of ESB I think of you. What is it about ESB that you love so much?

“It’s not hoppy and it just does the trick. My world ended when they took it off tap. I stuck with Amber and Irish Red happily, but now ESB is back! I hope everyone will drink it and give it a shot.”

And Present Tense ESB - what is the significance of the name of this beer?

“Present Tense is a song on the Pearl Jam album “No Code”! The label gives a nod to that album design and has some elements from the album as well as my poster collection.”

🎵“When the [ESB] in my tank, feels like money in the bank…”🎸🍻
